Thanks in large part to a burgeoning genre of early Youtube video, Zelda CD-i titles have become iconically infamous to entire generations of fans – or at least, two of them did. The nightmarish animation of Link: Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon is burned into the collective memory of many a Zelda fan, but the third title for the system – Zelda’s Adventure – often gets less attention, despite its own oddities and the fact that it actually employs the series’ traditional topdown perspective.

Well, it falls by the wayside no longer – a guy named John Lay has faithfully recreated the entire game on the original Game Boy using GB Studio. It uses the visual style of Link’s Awakening with some touches from the Oracle titles, and both looks and runs smoother than the quasi-FMV graphics of the original – whether the loss of the live-action actors and scenes is a blessing or the removal of charm is a matter of taste.

You can play the title online or download the game for emulation or use on real GB hardware right now.
