Even though it was initially a freeware release, the surreal visual novel Doki Doki Literature Club has gone on to become one of the biggest indie gaming hits. It now has a huge cult following and quite a bit of merchandise, like the recently announced Natsuki Nendoroid, with likely more on the way.
Despite the original game being available for free, its commercial release in 2021 has managed an impressive feat of its own – over one million units sold worldwide. To mark the occasion, creator Dan Salvato will be holding a livestream this Friday.
This Friday at 6pm PST, I plan to stream some of the DDLC Plus Side Stories as a chance to connect with the community, and to express gratitude for your support in bringing us to the unfathomable milestone of reaching 1 million players. https://t.co/vl9l6PjKh1 pic.twitter.com/0sZMMVkP8P

In an additional PR statement it has also been confirmed that there is a continued commitment to using profit from Doki Doki Literature Club Plus to fund mental health nonprofits.
