Surely you’ve had the feeling before of playing a game and going “man, this would be such a cool anime.” Well, Japanese publication Anime! Anime! asked its fans which anime adaptations of popular video games they’d like to see in 2023 and beyond, and the poll results show some big demand for anime from Nintendo properties.

The number one most requested was Splatoon, with 8% of readers wanting to see an adaptation, several expressing desire to see cool animation or learn more about the world-building. There’s a modestly popular Splatoon manga in publication (that’s actually gotten the motion comic treatment), so the series is no stranger to adaptation. Second was Xenoblade with around 5% (comments noting the ease of adaptation and the cute girls), and third was The Legend of Zelda, also around 5% but barely lower (comments noting the story and scenery would make for great adaptation).

The full top 10 is:

  1. Splatoon
  2. Xenoblade Chronicles
  3. The Legend of Zelda
  4. Undertale
  5. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  6. Animal Crossing
  7. Kingdom Hearts
  8. Minecraft
  9. Jack Jeanne
  10. Buddy Mission BOND

The survey was composed of 1,609 responses compiled from December 3rd through 11th. The gender ratio was about 35% male to 60% female, with 55% under 19 and 25% in their 20’s. Anime! Anime! also held a separate poll for mobile games or “App Games” people wanted anime adaptations of, which was won by Project Sekai: Colorful Stage feat. Hatsune Miku.

Traditionally, there have been very few anime adaptations of Nintendo properties. There was a very short Fire Emblem OVA in the ’90s, Kirby and F-Zero TV anime in the early ’00s, a onetime Animal Crossing film, and the imminent Super Mario Bros. Movie (which in Japanese would be considered anime). But who knows? Maybe some adaptations will be on their way sooner rather than later.
