It’s been a hot minute since the HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III and the next entry in the series, Dragon Quest XII, were announced in the middle of 2021 during the franchise’s 35th anniversary. But progress on the two is going swimmingly, according to franchise mastermind Yuji Horii. In an interview with Famitsu (via Nintendo Everything), Horii stated that the team is working hard on Dragon Quest XII, and that they can hopefully share more info on the III remake soon:

“We’re working hard on Dragon Quest XII and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake! I can’t say much yet, but we might be able to deliver more news on DQIII soon. We’re grateful that people are putting big expectations on DQIII too.”

Horii notes that they usually remake/port the first games in sequential order (I then II then III) but chose to give III the HD-2D remake treatment first due to it being a more complete game. No word on consoles for the two games yet, but given that HD-2D games have always landed on Switch first that seems like a safe bet. Stay tuned for more.
