As part of tonight’s Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary stream, Square Enix brought on six game announcements for devotees to enjoy both online and offline. This included the awaited announcement of Dragon Quest XII, but none left an impression quite like an old classic.

In this brief trailer, we get to see the debut of Dragon Quest III 2D-HD Remake. Made by staff from the Octopath Traveler team, it carries that game’s gorgeous art style while maintaining the distinct Dragon Quest style. Most impressively so during battles, which gave us Golden Sun flashbacks before settling into the familiar view.

No release date, or even system, was announced but SE is aiming for a worldwide launch. It was also hinted that the original Dragon Quest and Dragon Quest II may follow in this style, however nothing was confirmed other than III. Personally I’m hoping for Dragon Quest V and maybe even some classic Final Fantasy with these graphics, but for now we’ll be looking forward to Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake whenever it may come.
