Ah, August. The season of football starts. I think. Do I look like someone who knows things about sports? I just watch Jon Bois videos and perennially wait for the Seattle Mariners to break my heart. Okay, hold on let me fact-check myself. …It turns out professional American football starts not in August, but in September. But for those who don’t play or watch actual football but instead just imagine they did, August does appear to be the start, if the release and immediate sales success of Madden 23 is anything to go by.

Yes, the perennial sportsball game where they don’t update much and sell it back at full price and still become a blockbuster is back… not on Switch. Madden’s never been on Switch, in fact. Did you notice? I didn’t. Especially since fellow giant sportsball franchises FIFA and NBA 2K have made homes on the system for quite some time. And while I’m loathed to suggest anyway EA could make more money, especially in such a cheap and easy way, this would be one of them. I mean, the game sells so well it immediately shot to #5 in the YTD NPD sales ranking, taking the number one spot in August effortlessly. Imagine if it had a Switch version to bolster that. People really do like scoring home runs, huh.

What else is there…? Oh right, Nintendo stuff, the entire purpose of this website. I have a rule of thumb that if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best-selling game of the month on Switch (it was) then nothing particularly interesting happened. Nintendo didn’t really release anything, presumably because they wanted to give people time to play Xenoblade Chronicles 3 (the #2 Switch game of the month). The rest of the list is the usual suspects, though Digimon Survive managed to hold on another month and actually rose one spot while Breath of the Wild climbed a few spots back into the top ten (it may do even better this month with the Tears of the Kingdom news).

Besides that… video games! They’re still selling! The PS5 continues to lead in hardware dollar sales while the Switch leads in units sold! There’ll be more video games this month! And we’ll be sure to report on what’s selling well or not next month (we got a good feeling about this “splah tuun thrii’” game).
