According to Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb, a remaster of the Nintendo 64 release of Goldeneye 007 is stuck in release limbo due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

While Grubb’s words certainly are not to be taken as official details from Microsoft and Rare, there is more than enough confirmation proving the game’s actual existence and pending release.

Over the last few months, several Xbox players and outlets have spotted developers from Rare unlocking Xbox Live achievements for the Goldeneye 007 remaster. Microsoft had also accidentally listed the achievement page on its website and a scrapped Xbox 360 build of the game even surfaced online after 13 years.

In the original Goldeneye 007 game and movie, MI6 agent James Bond goes up against a Russian crime syndicate nine years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Understandably, it’s easy to recognize why releasing such a title at this time could seem inappropriate to Microsoft and Rare. Similarly, Nintendo is going through the same situation with the delayed remaster of Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp as the game’s plot featured elements of a military invasion.

As to whether or not this remaster of Goldeneye 007 would come to Nintendo Switch is unknown, however, Microsoft has published several games on the hybrid platform and allowed Banjo-Kazooie to appear on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
