The ’90s and very early 2000s were the pinnacle of games about goofy lil’ cartoon animals bouncing around and throwing punches. While some, like Sonic and even Gex, have remained in the public consciousness in one way or another, any number of others have faded into obscurity (remember Rocky Rodent?).

One platformer mascot with a cult following is Kao the Kangaroo, a punchy marsupial from Polish developer Tate Multimedia. In 2020, to celebrate the first game’s 20th anniversary, a reboot of the series was announced, which was recently given the release date of May 27th, 2022.

A new trailer shows off some of the game’s combat, which, while it may not be Devil May Cry, fits perfectly for the era it’s trying to replicate. The whole game looks to have a fun, bouncy feeling that brings me right back to the games of the era.

Kao the Kangaroo releases for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, the Xbox family of platforms, and Steam on May 27th.
