Today’s New Game Plus expo had plenty of announcements but the one that caught my eye was Samurai Bringer from developer ALPHAWING Inc. and publisher Playism.

While games mimicing the visual styles of older consoles are nothing new, Samurai Bringer goes for the oft-underrepresented aesthetic of the DS, with chunky pixels and low-poly models aplenty.

In terms of gameplay, it’s a roguelite where you take down rival samurai and a variety of yo-kai on your way to defeat Yamata-no-Orochi, the eight-headed serpent. You’ll be able to fight over 100 iconic Japanese warriors, such as Oda Nobunaga, Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura, and take their gear and combat styles into future runs.

Samurai Bringer cuts onto the scene next month on April 21st.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
