The Sonic cinematic universe is growing, with a third Sonic the Hedgehog film in the works in addition to a Knuckles-centric Paramount+ live-action series.

In an exclusive from Deadline Hollywood, it was revealed that Paramount Pictures and Sega have begun development on a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie to follow Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Next year, streaming service Paramount+ will also debut the first-ever Sonic live-action series, with Idris Elba reprising his voice role from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

“We are delighted to announce that the third Sonic theatrical film and the first live action Sonic series for Paramount+ are being actively developed. We’ve got a remarkable partnership with Paramount, and we are excited to continue expanding the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise with them,” said Sega Corporation CEO Haruki Satomi in a statement. “2022 is shaping up to be a significant year for the franchise with the second film being released this April, as well as Sonic Frontiers, the highly anticipated video game title, coming this holiday. Sonic has been beloved by fans across the world for over 30 years and we look forward to continuing to bring memorable moments and experiences to them for many years to come.”

While the Knuckles series on Paramount+ was given a “2023” release date, no date for the third Sonic movie was announced.

The second Sonic film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, is expected to arrive in theaters on April 8th, 2022.
