This weekend was host to CEOtaku, a dedicated fighting game tournament for more anime inspired fare in the genre. Present and accounted for was Skullgirls, the indie labor of love that just doesn’t quit. After its final match a new trailer debuted, focusing on the upcoming DLC character and sentient saltmine Umbrella. The raincoat touting cutie is on the way (though not to Switch) in early 2022, but another fighter has made her presence known.

Black Dahlia has featured in Skullgirls lore before, and can be seen as a cameo in one of the game’s stages. In the past it was said that if there were ever to be a dedicated story mode (as opposed to the character specific story routes) it would require Black Dahlia’s presence, making this a tantalizing addition to the game from that perspective.

Though she didn’t secure a spot during the game’s Indiegogo campaign it looks like the doily-caped matron is ready to make her move. Per that same campaign’s character outlines she could take inspiration from the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom 2’s version of Cable, Darkstalkers’ B.B. Hood, Hol Horse from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and the Super Smash Bros. series’ take on Meta Knight. This would be via hidden weaponry and that grenade launcher sized shotgun of an arm she has, as well as concealed movement options. It’s worth noting these ideas could be outdated, but for now give the best indication of what to expect.

Be on the lookout for more details on Skullgirls 2nd Encore, including when these Season 1 DLC offerings could potentially make their way to the Switch version.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
