Shigeru Miyamoto briefly took over today’s Nintendo Direct to make an announcement on his non-theme park pet project. The Super Mario Bros. animated film, coming from Nintendo and Illumination, has received both a release date and its main cast.
The Super Mario Bros. Animated Film movie is heading to theaters in North America on 12/21/22!

The movie will arrive during Holiday 2022, with only North America getting a firm release date: December 21st, 2022.
Most interesting of all is its cast list, featuring recognizable names from Hollywood tagging in to voice favorites from the Mushroom Kingdom:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong
- Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong
- Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek
- Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike
While many of these characters were to be expected, Cranky Kong is a definite surprise. This also fully confirms Spike (presumably Foreman Spike and not the recurring enemy), as previously reported.
While it’s unfortunate that Charles Martinet, the man who has played a huge part in bringing Mario to life since the character was voiced in games, will not be taking his usual role, he will be involved. Expect “surprise cameos” from Martinet throughout the movie, though no hints were given. Maybe he’ll sneak in a “woo-hoo” or two?
Look forward to more details, as well as a first Super Mario movie trailer, sometime in the future.
