The lead up to (and apparently multiple years after) a Super Smash Bros. release is defined by new fighters. Finding out who’s next or the roster’s overall growth is a hype inducing cascade of information, but it’s hardly the only thing. Stages, music, and items all get that same sort of love in smaller doses thanks to the Smash Blog and other demonstrations. At the top of those additions rest the Assist Trophies.

Introduced in Brawl, the Assist Trophy became instantly beloved. Why wouldn’t it? Poké Balls were already a cool concept and prime cameo fuel, so naturally expanding that from one series to all of them (and even ones that don’t get a fighter) made perfect sense. You don’t need me telling you that, though, because it’s likely you saw the featured image and got excited by all those not-quite fighters.

To be fair, I don’t think a Nintendog would ever step into the ring. But it’s hard not to look at the likes of Bomberman, Isaac, and Skull Kid and wonder what if they got a shot like Little Mac and Dark Samus before them. We all know Shadow the Hedgehog is just begging to be an Echo, but for now he’ll have to settle for increased appearances during this weekend’s Smash Ultimate online tournament event.
