For its next DLC fighter, Samurai Shodown is heading back to its earliest days for a recurring character that I’m surprised hasn’t been included until now. Shiro Tokisada Amakusa was the original game’s final boss, and since then has shown up in subsequent titles and occasionally in other SNK works. Now he’s coming back with an updated look and the same old floating orb to lay into the latest in the franchise.

Named after a real life figure in Japanese history, Amakusa’s inclusion in this modern SamSho was somewhat up in the air due to timeline placement. Yet here we are, anticipating his arrival in one month’s time. A trailer is likely to arrive ahead of his release, bringing us one step closer to the game’s next DLC character – a guest from the Guilty Gear series.

Samurai Shodown, along with plenty more DLC characters at this point, is available now on Switch, PS4, and Xbox consoles. A Steam version will be launching alongside Amakusa’s arrival on June 14th.
