It’s been 20 years since Rare’s red squirrel overcame a table leg fixated monarch, multiple movie parodies, crushing personal loss, and one big operatic expulsion — but he’s still the king. Regardless of how anyone might feel about the crass elements of this 3D platformer, it pushed the N64’s capabilities and remains a bright and vibrant adventure on the system with its own niche in Nintendo history.

So have yourself a drink (if you’re able, otherwise it’s Mepsi Pax for you) in the name of this money-grabbing hero. He’s still the king in our eyes, and though we haven’t heard from him much since Rare joined Microsoft you can bet we’d be there to celebrate his return.

Make sure to check out Rare’s online store to view some new merch that’s been added for the occasion!

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
