During today’s Nintendo Direct, fans of the galaxy far, far away received news of a new Star Wars title heading to the Switch — and no, it wasn’t the leaked Star Wars: Republic Commando port from last week. This new title from Zynga and NaturalMotion Games and it’s an all-new, squad-based, free-to-play arena combat game called Star Wars: Hunters!
Not much is known of the title’s gameplay, other than the fact that it will feature a wide variety of Star Wars characters such as Wookiees, Mandalorians, Imperial Stormtroopers, Jedi, and Sith all duking it out in arena deathmatches taking place between Episodes 6 and 7.
From the official Star Wars website: “Set after the fall of the Galactic Empire, Star Wars: Hunters will connect players in real-time to battle in arena settings inspired by iconic Star Wars locales. Play as daring Bounty Hunters, heroes of the Rebellion, and an Imperial stormtrooper, in an action game that immerses players in fast-paced and visually stunning Star Wars conflict.”
This announcement was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one, and marks the first original Star Wars title to be announced for the system that isn’t a port of an older title or part of an existing series such as LEGO or Pinball FX.
Star Wars: Hunters will be available later year on the Nintendo Switch and will not need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership in order to play online.
