January 21st, 1999 in Japan marked the beginning of something incredible for video games. The original Super Smash Bros. was released on that day, and to celebrate that history Masahiro Sakurai has used his daily screenshot to pay tribute.

The majority of the original eight fighters are here, running across the screen much like they did before the Smash 64 title screen. DK, Kirby, and Fox may not be there but I like to think they’re right out of frame of this 22nd anniversary reunion shoot.

Take some time to play some Smash today and get in on the celebration!

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
