Ride a Chocobo, download Sephiroth in Smash Ultimate, and get hit for 9,999 damage by a Cactaur, because it’s Final Fantasy’s 33rd anniversary today! The original NES classic released on December 18th, 2020.

Here’s the portion of the celebratory article where I would snark about how a series named “Final” Fantasy has gone on for a third of a century, leading into the portion of the article where I explain the famous bit of trivia where it was called that, because at the time of release Squaresoft was on the verge of bankruptcy and thus pinned all their hopes and dreams on one JRPG that ended up so financially successful it saved the company and became a flagship in gaming. But the history of the franchise from its humble 8-bit origins, to the groundbreaking success of Final Fantasy VII, to the current sensation of Final Fantasy XIV and all the greatness in-between is worthy of veneration. Happy anniversary, kupo!
