It’s said that Shigeru Miyamoto gave Mario his trademark cap to make drawing him and rendering sprites easier, and good thing he did. Without that little shortcut we would be short the most iconic piece of clothing in all of video games.

It’s not the only one, though, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is about to remind you just how many of its characters wouldn’t be the same without their hats.

The new Headgear Tournament event is gathering up all kinds of helmets, headwear, and haberdashery with its eligible fighters. The biggest bit of irony here is that if we’re going strictly by default appearances, the most hat-happy character of all won’t be invited. Poor Kirby…

Still, you can throw your own hat in the ring to participate in this one this weekend, starting November 27th.
