As we approach the end of the year we’ll start to see more and more Game of the Year award showcases. Tokyo Game Show featured one of the first, with the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association offering up awards for some standout games released in the region between April 1, 2019, up through March 31, 2020.

This means a lot of 2019’s best are accounted for but one game in particular just made the cut-off point – Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Not only was it one of ten games to receive the Award for Excellency, but it also took home the Grand Award, which is essentially the Game of the Year prize. As Eurogamer reports, the award was partially granted thanks to the game being a “comfort to people all over the world” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Check out the full list of award winners courtesy of Siliconera below:

  • Ring Fit Adventure
  • Persona 5 Royal
  • Pokémon Sword and Pokemon Shield
  • 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim
  • Death Stranding
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses
  • Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
  • Yakuza: Like a Dragon
  • Nioh 2
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Pokémon Sword & Shield won two other key awards too; the Best Sales Award and Global Award: Japanese product. The clever indie gem Baba is You also netted the Game Designer’s Award.

We’ll just have to wait and see how many other awards New Horizons scoops up in the coming months!

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
