Though no indie character has made the jump to full-on fighter, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has laid groundwork and done wonders in including them. Just have a look at the most recent of Smash creator Masahiro Sakurai’s daily dev photos to be reminded of that fact.
 


 
Whether as Assist Trophy or Mii Fighter costume, that’s still Shovel Knight, Sans, and Cuphead standing together. Each of their reveals (but the costumes especially) has blindsided fans, and has only broadened Smash’s already vast reach. It’s enough to make you wonder who of them (or others, like Spirit Shantae) could make the jump to playable first.
