Last year, The Pokémon Company announced a partnership with Tencent, and today we got our first look at the results of that partnership – Pokémon Unite.

Effectively a Pokémon MOBA akin to DotA2 or League of Legends, though the genre isn’t officially mentioned, the game has you enter a 5-versus-5 competitive battle where you have to move up lanes to secure checkpoints, all the while defeating your opponents and computer-controlled creatures. Traditional Pokémon elements like levelling up and moves are incorporated, though the type advantage system is scrapped, likely due to the potential balancing issues it’d cause.

Pokémon Unite will launch as a free-to-start title for both Switch and mobile, with cross-play between both. A release window has yet to be confirmed.
