Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ rise to being the world’s quarantine game has seen celebrities searching those hot turnip prices, a never ending wave of album covers, and a few shoutouts in the late-night circuits. Add another one to that last category, as in his ongoing coverage of the coronavirus, John Oliver of HBO’s Last Week Tonight put a satirical spin on the game and its fortuitous timing.

The majority of the episode concerns the topic of COVID-19 testing in the US, with the Animal Crossing reference being only a small part of the (timestamped) video above. In it, the host jokingly implies that Nintendo may have something to do with the quarantine in order to suck us into Tom Nook’s wild ride.

Just the fact Animal Crossing has become such a part of our lives and is getting this sort of media attention speaks volumes on the series’ growth and why such an idea could even come to mind.
