Super Smash Bros. Ultimate really has become a celebration of gaming on all fronts, with the Spirit List in particular covering everything from obscure Virtual Boy releases to the big names. In recent months it’s even become a place for franchises that haven’t received playable character status, like Resident Evil and Astral Chain, and this weekend the Kunio-Kun/River City franchise will be joining them.

Now owned by Arc System Works, Kunio-Kun got its start in 1986 in arcades and features a group of Japanese high school student delinquents battling through the streets of Japan, with the series eventually adopting RPG elements. The series saw acclaim overseas on the NES with River City Ransom, and eventually there were multiple spin-offs like Super Dodge Ball, Crash ‘n’ the Boys, and even the soccer game Nintendo World Cup.

This new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirit Event focuses mainly on the River City Ransom sprites, and will take place over this weekend, starting Friday, January 24!

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
