Arc System Works has built up an impressive array of characters over the years, and now they’re crossing over in a brand-new 2D action game – Code Shifter.

In the game you blast your way through stages with over 100 characters from the Guilty Gear, BlazBlue, River City, and even more franchises to choose from. There’s also an arena battle mode, where up to four players can duke it out competitively.

And strangest of all is the story tying the game together, which features an entirely different art style as you watch the game’s developers defend the code during the run-up to launch from nefarious bugs. Very meta!

Code Shifter launches for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC in Japan on January 30th, while the western launch is going to be “soon.”

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
