Famitsu held their own Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament in Japan, and to cap off the festivities creator and director Masahiro Sakurai made an appearance. While the event was more a fun exhibition, Sakurai did let slip that that very day he had been working on a brand new fighter that hasn’t been announced yet, as translated by Black Kite via Japanese Nintendo.

Famitsu previously honored Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a 2018 Game of the Year, making the appearance more than fitting. Speaking of Game of the Year, with Smash being nominated for a similar honor at The Game Awards 2019 and last year’s show marking the reveal of Joker as the first DLC fighter, it’s looking increasingly likely that Nintendo could go full circle for the Fighter Pass’ fifth character.

As Challenger Pack five is due “by February 2020”, the December 12th Game Awards would fit that timing perfectly. With more characters due past that though, it’s looking like 2020 will be another year of Smashing speculation and anticipation.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
