Mario and Sonic took a few years off from the Olympics, but they’re back to compete in Tokyo, with a few new tricks up their sleeves. A new trailer in Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct showed off the story mode for the new game, which puts Mario, Sonic, Bowser, and Eggman inside a video game of the Tokyo 1964 Olympics.

The mode is complete with classic sprites from Mario’s 8-bit era and Sonic’s 16-bit days. In multiplayer, some of the events can be played in this style. The trailer shows off pixelated events in hurdles, running, volleyball, rowing, and more; and it looks like a welcome addition to mix up the gameplay from the older entries.

The trailer showed off rock climbing, which looked more fantastical than other entries in the series have been. You can even see scenery from Sonic Unleashed’s Rooftop Run!
