Isabelle has been confirmed to make an appearance in the upcoming Animal Crossing: New Horizons, although her presence depends on how much progress a player has made in-game.

The news comes from an interview IGN held with New Horizons developers Aya Kyogoku and Hisashi Nogami.

“If Tom Nook is a great recruiter, and if he succeeds with the Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package PR, then [Isabelle] may come back,” Kyogoku said.

According to the interview, the direction players take their island will affect whether or not Isabelle appears.

Players start the game off in a tent, and if they choose to remain in a tent instead of upgrading to a house, Tom Nook may not consider certain NPCs and facilities necessary for the island.

“If the player chooses to stay in the tent, Tom Nook may say ‘Hey, actually, that guy likes living more of an outdoorsy, wild life,’” Kyogoku said. “So he may not see the necessity of adding new resident support services. But then if you do upgrade to a house, he may see a need for some sort of new facility.”

Nogami shared how odd it would be if a more outdoorsy player living in a shack had a convenience store built right next to them, and compared Isabelle’s appearance requirements to that.

Ultimately, what it sounds like is Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives a lot of control to the player, and how big you grow your island will affect what characters, facilities, and features you attract.
