Tomorrow Sonic and friends (and enemies, and freshly hatched creatures) will slip into the driver’s seat and bring the long-awaited Team Sonic Racing to Nintendo Switch and other platforms. A new video’s gone up to spotlight the three character types, giving racers different skills and abilities in a direct callback to Sonic Heroes’s hook and (even further back) the character variety found in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

Speed characters do just that: go fast! They’ll be the ones blazing down the track and taking point for your team. That means they can grab item boxes and send them back to allies further back, and are able to take out incoming projectiles with well timed bursts.

Power types, including everyone’s favorite giant feline, are able to smash through obstacles to make the track a little more manageable and maybe even open shortcuts. They’re slower but sturdier, though they also get a lot more out of boosts to keep up with the rest.

Technique characters, like the adorable Chao and not-so-adorable Dr. Eggman, have the best handling of the three classes. They’re also able to slip off to rougher terrain to cut corners without much speed loss and attract rings to support the team in their own way.

It’ll be interesting to see how all this variety comes together when the grand prix begins tomorrow, with Team Sonic Racing finally getting that checkered flag.
