As of May 1st, 2019, upon the ascension of Emperor Naruhito to the throne, Japan has entered the Reiwa era. To mark the occasion, and get in some sneaky new advertising, Nintendo uploaded a video highlighting Super Mario Maker 2’s creation capabilities.

Various objects spell out the three most recent eras, which are appropriately represented by Mario games through the ages. There’s “Showa” in Super Mario Bros., “Heisei” in Super Mario World, and finally “Reiwa”, which has the new Super Mario 3D World aesthetic.

It’s worth noting that while there are pretty seamless transitions from theme to theme, the score and time tickers change, so don’t expect the ability to go from Super Mario Bros. to Super Mario World in a single level.

Super Mario Maker 2 launches on June 28th.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
