So, Persona 5 R has gotten a new trailer and a new subtitle (The Royal), but the PlayStation 4 is still the only console attached to the project. Still, there’s an interesting reveal in the recent video that will be of interest to Smash Bros. fans…

Last month, dataminer Dr. Hyper Cake discovered a text string that refers to a “Jane” with “pony_hair” in relation to “Jack” (which seems to be Joker’s code-name.)

Given the mysterious new female character in the trailer has a ponytail hairstyle, it could be a reference to her. While the initial impression is that she’s a gender-swapped version of Joker, multiple sources are claiming she states she doesn’t like the Phantom Thieves, which would make her unrelated to the main party. Either way, her being the focal point could suggest she’ll play a key role in The Royal.

If she is going to be involved in the Smash Bros. DLC somehow, perhaps as an alternate costume for Joker, that may give us a better idea of the DLC’s release window. Last month’s Direct said he’d be available “before the end of April”, and given the next information for Persona 5: The Royal will be revealed at the Persona Super Live 2019 concert on April 24th, it’ll likely happen after that date if it does include a brand-new character.

We’ll be sure to bring you all the latest as it comes in.
