The official Animal Crossing website went down for approximately 20 minutes this morning, and naturally, fans have exploded in a speculative frenzy over what it could possibly mean for the future of the series.
The downtime was observed by Twitter user @pixelpar and a whirlpool of excitement and theorizing broke out on Reddit shortly after.

With today’s Nintendo Direct just a few hours out, many hope that the site may have been down to accommodate content changes in preparation for additional information about Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch.
“Me: don’t think about this TOO much. Also me: holy shit this means we’re 101% getting animal crossing news oh my goodness,” writes Reddit user supersmashjojos.
“If we don’t get animal crossing info I’m gonna load up smash and just beat up villagers for 2 hours,” adds neongoyf.
Ignoring my personal hype, it’s difficult to say with any confidence whether the site’s downtime means anything for potential Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch announcements — during today’s Nintendo Direct or otherwise.
Websites go down all the time for a multitude of reasons and not necessarily because of the addition of new content.
So, y’know, it’s probably nothing. Or, y’know… OH, MY GOD, THEY’RE GONNA ANNOUNCE THE TITLE OF THE NEW ANIMAL CROSSING GAME AND ITS RELEASE DATE AND SHOW GAMEPLAY TODAY AND IT ISN’T GONNA BE ANOTHER FAKE-OUT LIKE THAT TIME THEY SHOWED THE ISABELLE AMIIBO ON THE WII U GAMEPAD AND ALL WE GOT WAS AMIIBO FESTIVAL AND SHATTERED DREAMS.
It’s really up in the air.
What do you think? Is there reason to be excited, or is this another case of the fan community hyping itself up for nothing? Will we see any Animal Crossing news during today’s Nintendo Direct? Let us know in the comments!
