Dragon Quest is huge in Japan. That’s one of the most well known factoids about the franchise, with stories of people skipping work simply to dive straight into the latest entries, which became such an epidemic they had to shift their release dates to the weekend, although it’s urban myth that the Japanese government forced the move.

Now, that love for the franchise is resulting in a 3D CG movie, based on Dragon Quest V. Originally released by Enix for the Super Famicom back in 1995, Dragon Quest V has become a fan favorite, with ports to other platforms including the PS2, DS and iOS.

This new movie, titled Dragon Quest: Your Story, is being directed by Takashi Yamazaki, whose previous credits include Stand by Me Doraemon and Space Battleship Yamato. The film will be released in Japan on August 2nd.
