At the tail end of today’s Smash Bros. Direct, Masahiro Sakurai began speaking about DLC. Five packs, each containing a fighter, stage, and multiple music tracks will be produced but alongside them will be one other playable character separate from the now christened Fighter Pass. Somehow, Sakurai always manages to pull out some kind of surprise. By registering the game in a special, limited window of time you’ll receive the Mario series’ Piranha Plant as a fully playable fighter. You can’t make this up — a potted, eyeless, plant will join the ranks in Nintendo’s flagship crossover. With a Final Smash that brings out Petey Piranha with his Subspace Emissary cages, it’s a fun albeit strange callback that simultaneously fits in Smash and breaks precedents.
