The Smash 64 stages returning for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are all aiming to keep their throwback charm rather than the visual upgrades glossing up those from Melee on. A handful of these were already on Smash Wii U, but more than any other I’m happy to see this Pokemon Red & Blue metropolis finally make its grand return just as I remember it.

Welcome back to Saffron City, and the top of the Silph Co. HQ itself. You won’t have to deal with its multiple floors and warp tiles here, but speaking of sudden appearances out of nowhere, the same set of Pokemon are back to attack anyone close enough to their doorway.

They even keep their original sprites, even if nearly everything else in the game looks polished as can be. Still, having Charmander (my first starter!) back in the game in some way, along with high speed Porygon tackles and the ever-present explosive threat of Electrode, make this one stand out even among the rest of the original game’s stages.
