There’re quite a few Assist Trophies that people wish were playable in Smash, and this hero’s ranked amongst them even before his debut. A recurring face in plenty of Indie hits and one of the finest, modern mascots in gaming, Shovel Knight is here to strike the earth and lend a hand.

He’ll be able to bury foes in the ground, brings his Shovel Drop, and it looks like he might even be able to dig up some food every now and then. All of this is standard issue for the champion of shovelry, but rendered wonderfully in Smash’s style. It may not be the first time he’s shown up in 3D but just like nearly one else in this game, Assist or playable, he’s looking fantastic.

When he isn’t writing for Nintendo Wire, Ricky’s anticipating the next Kirby, Fire Emblem, or if the stars ever align, Mother 3 to be released. Till then he’ll have the warm comfort of Super Smash Bros. to keep him going.
