Back during the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct, director Masahiro Sakurai had plenty of reveals for the game, one of which dealt with its stage count. The game boasts 100 distinct stages — along with Battlefield, Big Battlefield, and Final Destination to bring the total to 103. Now though, it sounds like we might have a few more to look forward to after all.

Based on a spread in Japanese magazine CoroCoro, provided and translated by Source Gaming, there will be 108 stages instead. This information didn’t come with any reveal of what those stages could be, and with Isabelle being the latest fighter and Animal Crossing already having a few, it’s not likely the news will relate to her. The quick and hopeful guess is that this means five brand new stages, ideally to coincide with five brand new fighters that would require home stages.
Bear in mind, there are some older stages that aren’t coming back as of right now, so those could fill out those numbers as well. We’re all still hoping for Poké Floats, but 3DS’ Pac-Maze and Rainbow Road are a bit notable in their absence, as is Wii U’s Woolly World. Only time will tell what the five potential stages could be, what games or fighters they might represent, and if there’ll be an announcement from Nintendo themselves in the near future. We’ll be sure to let you know once more details come to light — with three months to go, things just keep heating up for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
