For many years (almost two decades, at this point) fans have been whispering of an elusive sequel to Chrono Trigger dubbed “Chrono Break” that would serve as a more proper and fully fledged follow-up than the more experimental and tangentially related Chrono Cross. Square Enix has never realized this want, however, leaving fans craving… and one of those fans – Simon S. Andersen, creator and lead pixel artist for the wonderful Owlboy – has taken matters into his own hands, creating a mock-up trailer for the mythical sequel that never was.

True to his prestige, Andersen’s pixel and animation work is absolutely stunning, accompanied by an arrangement of Yasunori Mitsuda’s iconic score. The mock-up shows what appears to be an older Lucca and Magus in a variety of familiar locales, from the far flung future factory of 2300 A.D. to Magus’s old stomping grounds in medieval times. Combined with the regular ticking of Trigger’s iconic opening pendulum before it shatters into pieces, and it becomes almost harrowing.

You can catch the trailer above, and if you’ve never played Chrono Trigger… what are you doing? Go pick up a copy this instant!
