While the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Direct this morning had no small amount of good stuff shown off, there was one aspect in which Masahiro Sakurai was notably mum on — a good quarter of the main menu screen was blurred out for the sake of a later reveal. But a Twitter sleuth by the name of @noctulescent has gone through the blurred name frame by frame to parse out the supposed identity — and it spells the word “spirits.”

That name certainly provokes intrigue, considering it has no connection to any established Smash mode. But the name might have something to do with the fact that every character trailer so far has featured death and horror. (Mario and Mega Man got stabbed, Dedede’s been clobbered, and Luigi had his soul reaped by Death itself.) Given the Direct’s vagueness about boss characters like Dracula and Rathalos, this might be the mode in which they show up in. But what is it? An adventure mode? Story mode? Something else? We’ll have to wait and see.

Stay wired for more Smash Ultimate Direct coverage as the day goes on.
