After its full reveal last week we finally have a proper look at the upcoming Team Sonic Racing, and it definitely looks like quite the departure from the typical Kart Racer formula.

As Kotaku UK and ShackNews reveal from their hands-on time with the E3 2018 demo, the 12 car line-up of characters is split into 4 teams, each comprised of Speed, Power and Technique racers. Rather than simply relying on one racer coming first, the whole team’s positions are scored separately and added up, meaning it’s much more of a team sport. This is reflected in the Wisp items, which can be given to team members who are trailing behind to give them the boost they need to catch up.

The characters confirmed so far are Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge and Omega. That’s two teams from Sonic Heroes, so you have to wonder if Team Rose and Team Chaotix will also make the cut. Various generic Eggman robots can also be spotted in the footage below.

It’s also confirmed that the track they’re racing on is called the Wisp Circuit, and it offers multiple paths.

We’re sure to find out more about the game as we approach launch!

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
