While Square Enix’s heavy hitting franchises slowly but surely moved away from Nintendo’s home consoles over the past few decades, smaller, more nostalgic RPGs found their way to the company’s handhelds. Those lines are starting to blur when it comes to the Nintendo Switch, with the upcoming exclusive Octopath Traveler shaping up to be a very interesting adventure.

Fittingly, the Octopath Traveler team is being devoted to Switch development, according to a recent interview from GameInformer. This is what Tomoya Asano, the new division’s executive, had to say:

“Square Enix has decided that it wants to focus on original titles for the Switch. If Octopath Traveler does well and this is something that appeals to fans, we want to focus on Switch. Please pick up the Switch if you want to play games like Octopath Traveler.”

Not only that but “several other titles” are already in the works for the system, and it sounds like they’ll also be exclusives. Given the shared staff with Bravely Default, which has been referenced in some cross-over artwork, it has us wondering if a new Bravely game could be on the horizon.

Octopath Traveler launches on July 13th.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
