One of this year’s best surprises is about to get even better, with a free local multiplayer Versus mode heading to Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Announced on the Ubisoft blog, the mode allows two players either using two controllers or one Joy-Con each to pick a team of three from the eight playable heroes to do battle with one another.

The mode sounds surprisingly fleshed out. The characters do not carry over stats and gear from the single-player campaign; instead, each character is balanced and comes with different premade loadouts. The maps are relatively small and have optional power-ups spread around the field. One big difference between Versus and the story mode is that each player will only have three actions per turn, making it a battle of strategy as you choose between using a turn to move all of your fighters, or putting all of your actions into one or two characters attacking.

Matches can be customized greatly, allowing players to add a seven or ten turn limit, set time limits per turn and even enable the Showtime option, which strengthens powerups and opens pipes and trampolines around the map once the match nears the last few turns.

This surprise mode is separate from the season pass and will be available for free for all owners of the game tomorrow, December 8, 2017.
