Words cannot describe my elation when it was announced that the Nintendo Switch would be region free. While we already knew this meant importing physical games could be played regardless of the region they were purchased in, we now have confirmation that accessing regional variant eShops will also be possible, not to mention extremely simple.

As long as you’ve created a relevant account for the regional eShop you wish to access, downloading digital titles is a snap. Let’s assume you have a North American account and wish to download the Japanese exclusive game Dragon Quest Heroes I & II. All you need to do is set up and log in to a separate Japanese account, switch languages, and you’re done!

Just remember, games and downloadable content are paired together, meaning you can’t mix and match multiple regional content and expect them to work properly. In other words, don’t expect a season pass for Breath of the Wild purchased in the Japanese eShop to work with your North American copy of the game.
