Playing Wind Waker for the first time way-back-when, I was constantly entranced by the new character designs. Be they island residents or Rito, there was something about the character to character variance that made me want to know more about these individuals. That’s doubled for the Korok, easily one of my favorite parts of that or any Zelda game.

Nintendo’s latest upload for Breath of the Wild shows off a couple of these little guys, who we know will be making their return appearance in the new title. Check it out, and you’ll see that spirit of variety and intrigue is alive and well.

While the leftmost fellow is pretty standard design for these woodland sprites, the yellow leafed one has a lot more going on. The leaf’s placement and color call to mind aging, positioned like a beard and the gold of it implying it’s getting on in years. Or would that be seasons? The more gnarled look also evokes wrinkles, especially when next to the smoother styled Korok. Finally there’s the vine and mushroom combination. The fungi in particular call to mind warts or other skin growths, but might also just tie in to the seasonal look.

We still don’t know what greater roll the Korok could play in Breath of the Wild, but I’m eager to find out. With this aged one being present, perhaps he’ll know a thing or two about the past? Maybe even a past we as players could be familiar with? Regardless, we’ve seen Korok hiding around the overworld and with March 3rd coming fast it’s only a matter of time till they reveal their secrets.
