Immediately after the Switch was first revealed back in October of last year, Nintendo fans took to social media to proclaim their love for the new console’s doglike appearance, lopsided eyes and all. You’ve got to admit: the likeness is a bit uncanny.

Artists from around the world couldn’t help but celebrate the puppy-esque qualities of the hardware, and before you knew it, artwork showcasing the lovable Switch pup started popping up just about everywhere. From drawings, to plush toys, to custom amiibo, the Switch puppy became somewhat of a Nintendo fan phenomenon.

As it turns out, the affinity between the Switch and dog was no accident; it was, in fact, intentional, according to Nintendo’s Yoshiaki Koizumi. He confirmed this when speaking with Wall Street Journal’s tech journalist Takashi Mochizuki recently by saying that his team was thinking of a dog while making the Switch.

So, there you have it! The soon-to-be-released console was designed to have that cute appearance after all. And honestly, we think it’s pretty great that Nintendo puts so much heart and personality into every detail of a new product.
