Sad news for fans and active users of Nintendo’s proprietary social networking platforms, as neither Miiverse nor the Nintendo 3DS’s StreetPass feature will be making the jump to Switch consoles.

The news comes via David Young, Nintendo of America’s assistant manager of public relations, who broke the tidbit to Gamesbeat today during the Switch event currently taking place in New York City.

“I can answer that we’re not going to be using Miiverse for Nintendo Switch,” Yong said when asked about the feature.

The lack of StreetPass is largely attributed to Switch software being designed around home console sensibilities with the added benefit of portability, rather than vice versa.

In regards to Miiverse, the shift perhaps proves even more sensible, as leveraging existing social media platforms instead of a closed network of diehard Nintendo fans could prove fruitful from both a user engagement and marketing standpoint.
