This week in the Nintendo eShop: Captain Falcon punches the competition, only platforming puzzler Shift DX remains standing.

Nintendo is hosting a massive New Year’s sale in the North American eShop this week! From now through January 25th at 8:59 a.m. PST | 10:59 CST | 11:59 a.m. EST, players can nab some pretty decent discounts on both strong Nintendo franchises and fantastic indie titles like Splatoon, Pocket Jockey, Affordable Space Adventures, Guacamelee and more. Best of all, My Nintendo members can save an additional 10% on all participating games! While there seems to have been a problem with the added discount applying to purchases yesterday when the sale went live, everything looks to be fixed now as of this morning.

Remember, both Pirate Pop Plus and Severed are cross-buy, meaning one purchase on either platform gets you a free copy on the other!

F-Zero X (Nintendo, $9.99) – Put FAST Racing NEO on ice and tune up your trusty Blue Falcons: futuristic racer F-Zero X is falcon punching the Wii U Virtual Console! Originally released on the Nintendo 64 back in 1998, F-Zero X is sometimes seen as the black sheep of the family due to its rather generic look and lack of technical flair. However, that’s not to say it didn’t vastly improve upon its 16-bit predecessor. What it lacks in graphical fidelity is more than made up fantastic track design, blistering fast gameplay and a steady frame rate at 60fps allowing up to 30 racers to be on screen simultaneously. Couple that with an excellent soundtrack of remixed tunes and nearly ten fold increase in playable characters and courses, and you have one of the best racers to ever grace the galaxy.

Shift DX (Gaijin Games, $4.99) – Originally released as a duo of flash games that were eventually ported to iOS, Shift DX is a straightforward platformer based on a single mechanic of constantly shifting your environment. At the press of a button, your little white protagonist on a black backdrop falls through the floor to become a black character on a white background. It’s a fun and simple concept ripe with complex puzzle platforming not unlike what you’d find in HAL Laboratory’s BOXBOY! series. What you get here is the complete shift experience: a compilation of all levels from Shift 1 and 2, as well as more than 100 brand new stages to master. There’s even a robust level editor chock full of intuitive creation tools that would give Super Mario Maker a run for its money. Did I mention Commander Video from the Bit.Trip Runner series makes a cameo appearance as a playable character? Give this nifty number a download if you like good things.
