This week in the Nintendo eShop: Donkey Kong Country 3 barrels its way onto the 3DS, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 finally makes its Nintendo console debut, and Metroid Prime Hunters blasts space pirate scum on the Wii U Virtual Console.
Charge those mega busters and sharpen your gunlances as select Capcom games are currently on sale in the Nintendo eShop through June 6th! For roughly $10 you can grab all six classic NES Mega Man titles on your 3DS or battle ferocious beasts in Monster Hunter Ultimate 3 on your console of choice. As a reminder, it’s also your last chance to capitalize on the Atlus and Sonic sales offered last week.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 – (KING Art, $19.99 | available 6/7) – Much like its predecessor, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a humorous point-and-click adventure game that lovingly parodies the fantasy genre – most notably fantasy RPGs and adventure games. With a witty script, charming cast of characters, and challenging set of puzzles, the game proves a comforting reminder that video games can draw back upon their traditional roots while still providing a thoroughly heartfelt and enjoyable experience.

Kick & Fennick (Jaywalkers Interactive, $10.49) – On the surface, Kick & Fennick may seem like your average run-of-the-mill 2D platformer – until you realize there is absolutely no jumping. At all. Instead, the aptly named Kick uses his massive plasma rifle’s recoil to propel himself to new heights in order to overcome well-crafted obstacles, puzzles and platforming challenges. Give it a download if you are looking for a fun and unique twist on a genre typically oversaturated with uninspired, by the book gameplay elements.
B3 Game Expo For Bees (Famous Gamous, $9.99) – Bee culture is pretty fascinating stuff. Did you know bees are nature’s most economical builders, can communicate with each other by dancing, and love to play video games? In this quirky, pun-filled FPS adventure, take flight as a rookie security bee at B3, the annual Game Expo for Bees. Blending the exploration of Metroid Prime with the wackiness of Animal Crossing, use the GamePad (or B.Pad as it’s referred to in-game) to download an assortment of helpful apps to solve its many Zelda-like puzzles.
153 Hand Video Poker (Skunk Software, $0.99) – A spin on video poker, this title fills your screen with 153 individual poker hands and then plays a corresponding piano chord based on the rank of each hand. I’ll be honest here and say I find the promotional video and description of this simulation game to be incredibly lackluster and confusing. Unless you’re a die hard fan of video poker, you’re much better off saving that dollar and taking a gamble on any of the other releases this week has to offer.
Wii U Virtual Console
Metroid Prime Hunters (Nintendo, $9.99) – Taking place between the events of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, legendary bounty hunter Samus Aran is sent on a mission by the Galactic Federation to investigate and retrieve the “ultimate power” residing in various artifacts scattered across the Alimbic solar system by a long extinct race of warriors. The game is perhaps most notable for pushing the DS to its maximum potential, both graphically and through innovative use of the touch screen, easily establishing it as one of the best handheld first person shooter experiences produced for the system. Sadly, as with the Virtual Console port of Mario Kart DS, it lacks the online multiplayer component of the original, so fans of the series will have to settle solely for Samus’ single player adventure this time around.

Sssnakes (EnjoyUp Games, $1.99) – Do you remember a simpler time when Snake was the pinnacle of mobile gaming back in the late ‘90s? Relive the glory days of trying to shatter your parents’ high score on their Nokia 6110 with Sssnake: a modern upgrade to the cult classic featuring multiple levels, objectives, enemies and hidden secrets. With its easy to play, yet difficult to master gameplay, chasing high scores is sure to prove just as addicting as it was almost 20 years ago, especially now with the addition of online leaderboards. There’s even a retro 8-bit mode included for those feeling particularly nostalgic, serving as a fun throwback to the games more simplistic origins.

(Nintendo, $7.99) – In this final chapter of the classic Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Donkey Kong and Diddy have gone missing and it falls on the shoulders of Dixie Kong and her new sidekick Kiddy to find out what happened. Often overshadowed by its predecessors (or entirely overlooked by early adopters of the Nintendo 64), DKC3 remains one of the best side-scrolling platforming adventures the SNES has to offer. The game boasts 48 levels of platforming bliss with hordes of collectibles to find for those driven enough to obtain that elusive 100% save file. Funky Kong also plays a more substantial role, building various vehicles for the dynamic duo to more freely explore the overworld map and discover new stages and hidden secrets.

Kirby: Planet Robobot (Nintendo, $39.99 | available 6/10) – Kirby is undeniably one of the most successful, charming and beloved franchises in Nintendo’s arsenal of characters, and he’s got a new game on the horizon! Harness the power of a mysterious mech to stop ruthless invaders from mechanizing Kirby’s home world. Pre-purchase his latest adventure right now so you can jump into the action without delay upon the game’s release next week.
