Guide – All Wii U-exclusive games to get before the eShop shutdown

Well, the time has come: Nintendo is officially shutting down the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops. The shutdown won’t be immediate:

• Beginning May 23rd, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use a credit card to add funds to an account via the 3DS and Wii U eShops.
• Then, on August 29th, 2022, it will no longer be possible to use Nintendo eShop Cards to add funds to an account through the 3DS and Wii U eShops.
• Nintendo 3DS and Wii U owners who wish to make purchases on those eShops can still do so by adding money to their account through the Nintendo Switch eShop — until “late March 2023.”
• On March 27th, 2023, the ability to make any purchases on the 3DS and Wii U eShops will be removed; it will no longer be possible to buy and download any new games, including free-to-start games and demos.

The changes to the 3DS and Wii U eShops will also take effect in any software where a player can make purchases, like the StreetPass Mii Plaza, Theme Shop, and Nintendo Badge Arcade.

Because of the impending Wii U eShop shutdown, we’ve put together this list of all exclusive Wii U content, including DLC and Virtual Console games, to help out anybody who wants these games before they’re lost to time! This list only includes games or versions of games you can only purchase on Wii U. That means you may see Wii U titles that received “Deluxe” versions on the Nintendo Switch.

Here are all the games exclusive to the Wii U, including games that later received enhanced ports to other systems. You can search by title, exclusivity (whether it’s an eShop exclusive or not), and publisher. We’ve also included notes on anything we think is worth mentioning about the game.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, initially a Wii U exclusive, was released for Nintendo Switch in 2018. It was then removed from the Wii U eShop. While it can be bought on the Switch, it remains physical-only on the Wii U (something to note for digital collectors).
