To the surprise of almost everyone, Nintendo will be holding one final Nintendo Switch-centric Direct tomorrow, March 27th, 2025. With the full unveiling of the Switch 2 still scheduled for April 2, 2025, that means this Direct will be less than one full week before we learn about the Switch successor. It seems kind of odd, though there was probably some behind-the-scenes logistical issue that prevented this Direct from happening earlier. Whatever the case, rumors are circulating about what this Direct will contain.

We could list everything we think will happen and let you get to guessing on how likely those announcements are, but that’s not fun. Instead, through a mixture of knowledge of the past and some assumptions, we’ll be ranking the likelihood of recent rumors appearing in tomorrow’s Direct. That means something outlandish, such as “A New Super Smash Bros,” won’t appear here because it simply is not happening.

With that out of the way, let’s get to ranking and speculating.

Metroid Prime 4 will be released before the Switch 2

With the Switch 2 unveiling happening next week and Nintendo being pretty adamant that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be a Switch 1 title, it stands to reason that Samus’ return to 3D will happen before players get their hands on Nintendo’s next console. This is less a rumor and more an educated guess, but why else would Nintendo host a Direct for Switch 1 games six days before doing a full reveal of the Switch 2?

This doesn’t mean that Prime 4 won’t have some Switch 2 enhancements or that a cross-generation version is ruled out, but it does seem more likely that Samus will sing the swan song for Nintendo’s most successful platform by being the last major release the Big N puts out. Some are speculating it could release in May, even, which isn’t that much time to wait.

While maybe I’m being too generous, I would say this rumor gets the highest possible rating.

Kirby: Planet Robobot Deluxe will be announced

It was rumored last December that an updated port of Kirby: Planet Robobot would be coming to the Switch as possibly one of the final games on the system. NatetheHate, who correctly guessed that a final Switch Direct would take place before the Switch 2 stream, stated on his podcast that the classic 3DS game would find a new home on Switch. He didn’t mention if it was an updated port or a full remake, but considering how Nintendo released Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe in 2023, this one seems very plausible.

Likelihood rating: 4/5

Metroid Prime 2 and 3 Remastered will be happening

I’m incredibly skeptical of this particular rumor, but it was stated many years ago that updated ports of all of the Metroid Prime games would be coming to Switch at some point… minus Prime Hunters and Pinball. After years of people stating this, Nintendo eventually released Metroid Prime Remastered in 2023, and that reignited the rumor of its sequels getting enhanced ports.

Now, I’m not so keen on this rumor because Nintendo is supposedly working on GameCube emulation of some kind. In October of last year, mostly reliable leaker LuigiBlood had noticed that recent updates to the Switch broke compatibility with third-party GameCube controllers. Nintendo was also reported to have been stocking up on parts to manufacture brand-new GameCube pads. If that ends up being true, it’s more likely the original versions of Metroid Prime 2 and 3 will wind up on an NSO GameCube app rather than as remasters… even if Prime 3 was a Wii title.

Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD finally make their way to Switch

At this point in the Switch’s lifecycle, you’d think there would be an entire collection of Zelda games on the platform. While you can, remarkably, play the first five games in their original formats through NSO and even the GBA classic Minish Cap, the system only has four specific Switch Zelda releases (excluding spinoffs). These include Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s Awakening (Remake), and Skyward Sword HD.

For years, it has been stated that the Wii U HD ports of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess would make their way to Switch alongside Skyward Sword HD. While that latter did receive a port in 2021, nothing else has happened on the Zelda front. A lot of that was probably down to Nintendo working on Tears of the Kingdom for six years, but some of it is maybe just that Nintendo doesn’t see a reason to port the two games yet. I wouldn’t doubt they will eventually show up again, but I cannot foresee them as Switch 1 ports.

Likelihood rating: 2/5

Super Mario Galaxy 2 will get an HD port

Before the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection was announced, rumors were floating around that it would include every single one of Mario’s 3D games, including Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario Galaxy 2. That obviously wound up not being the case, but people have not let go of the idea that Galaxy 2 will find its way to Switch at some point. As much as I love the game (I think it’s better than the first Galaxy), this one is likely the least plausible rumor for a few reasons.

The first is down to controls. Super Mario Galaxy mostly works fine on Switch because it doesn’t overly rely on motion inputs. Galaxy 2, however, incorporates Yoshi and requires you to use the pointer more extensively. It’s just not feasible for what the current Joy-Con can do. The second reason is the simple fact that you cannot even buy Mario 3D All-Stars anymore. Nintendo did a limited print run and even removed the game from the eShop because it wanted to spur sales for the collection. Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, claimed it was to commemorate the 35th anniversary in a unique way, but that’s just a PR spin on a dumb decision.

As such, this rumor gets the lowest possible score.

Likelihood rating: 1/5

Splatoon 1 Enhanced Edition

Truth be told, this isn’t really a rumor going around, but something I’m baffled hasn’t happened. During the Switch’s launch year, it made sense for Nintendo to create Splatoon 2 and kick off its new console with a brand-new game. Having a port of a Wii U title so early in the console’s lifecycle would have looked desperate and likely not inspired confidence in customers. Splatoon 2 is practically the same as the first, though it does feature a unique campaign and would eventually get DLC that expanded its single-player offering even further.

Still, with Splatoon 3 concluding a storyline that started all the way in the first Wii U game, why hasn’t Nintendo ported this to Switch yet? I can understand Nintendo not wanting to cannibalize the sales of Splatoon’s sequels by offering the original with full multiplayer, but why not just drop the multiplayer and make it a campaign remaster? I was hoping Splatoon 3’s “Inkopolis” DLC would do that, but it was not to be.

At any rate, this one is super unlikely, but I felt like including it anyway.
